News Update for 3/6/20

There was a fire in a home at Sebring Ridge last night. Firefighters were called to the residence on Trout Avenue about 10:30. They were able to contain the flames to a single bedroom.
No injuries were reported. No damage estimate has been released and the cause remains under investigation.

It’s going to be a busy weekend in Highlands County. Vet Jam continues today at Donaldson Park in Avon Park. Along with live music and food trucks, a corn hole contest, chili cookoff and water show are planned. That runs through Sunday.
In Sebring, the Backyard BBQ Bash fires up at Fireman’s Field. Set to go there are a kid’s center and a number of competition BBQ teams. The California Toe Jam Band will wind up tonight with a free concert.
Tomorrow will be the cookoff, live music and a big car show.
Saturday also will be the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office Bass Tournament at Istokpoga Park. Proceeds from that will go to send youngsters to the Florida Sheriff’s Youth Camp.

A Lake Wales man has been killed in a Frostproof traffic crash. Polk County Sheriff officials say 24-year-old Mason Chapman was riding his Yamaha motorcycle into the Friendly City at a high rate of speed.
A Honda Pilot, driven by 73-year-old Barbara Brown of Frostproof was making a left turn into the parking lot of the Save-A-Lot grocery, when Chapman’s bike hit the side of her car.
The force of impact threw Chapman off the bike, and into the back seat of the car. Investigators said he appeard to have tried to stop, leaving a 50-foot skid mark. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
