Last night in Sebring, emergency crews responded to reports of missing divers in Lake Jackson near City Pier Beach. Authorities say multiple agencies are involved in the search, including police, fire, wildlife, and sheriff’s units. As of 11:53 p.m., search efforts were still ongoing and the public was urged to avoid the area while first responders remained on scene. Anyone who was in the water near the Sebring Elks Lodge or pier area is asked to contact dispatch.
A 65-year-old Cape Coral man was killed Friday morning after a crash on U.S. Highway 27 in Highlands County. Troopers say the motorcyclist was traveling northbound when he struck debris in the roadway south of Skipper Road, lost control, and entered the median. The motorcycle then hit a sewer grate and traffic marker, ejecting the rider. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The crash remains under investigation.
Highlands County detectives have charged 31-year-old Andrew Anthony Berry with second-degree murder after a shooting Wednesday evening on Lake Groves Road Northeast. Investigators say Berry fired from a pickup truck into another vehicle, killing 30-year-old Marvin Lekeith Sholtz Jr. The victim lost control and crashed into a home, where he was pronounced dead at the scene. No one inside was injured. Detectives are seeking a second man for questioning.
RaceTrac is opening a new travel center Tuesday in Sebring at 7909 U.S. 27 South, with a ribbon cutting at 7 a.m. The first 30 customers will receive a $50 gift card. The 8,000-square-foot location offers fuel, food, and truck services, including high-flow diesel and CAT scales. RaceTrac says first responders can receive a free coffee or fountain drink at any location as part of its community support efforts. This marks RaceTrac’s first location in Highlands County.
