>>> HCSO Investigating Several Vehicle Burglaries

The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office is investigating several vehicle burglaries in the Sun N Lake Area that took place on Tuesday, April 21. They’re looking at specific streets, including Tangier St., Urbino St., Cadagua St., Perugia Ave, and Mercado Dr. Anyone in the area is asked to check their security footage that was captured after midnight on the 21 and submit it to the Sheriff’s Office. If you have any footage, you can upload it to the Sheriff’s Office data base, or call them at (863)402-7200 option 1. You can find the evidence link on their Facebook page. Officials are encouraging those that have been impacted to report it immediately.

>>> Scam Alert

The Sheriff’s Office also wants to make you aware of a scam that was going around earlier this week. Someone was calling residence posing as Sargent Ross Porter, asking people to pay money in order to make a case go away. Officials say law enforcement will never call and ask you for money, or tell you that you have a warrant out for your arrest. They also say that different phone numbers could be used to get in contact with people, so if you get a call like this, ignore it because it is fictitious in nature. If you have any questions, contact the Sheriff’s Office.

>>> FCFR Names New Medical Director

Dr. Cary Pigman has been named the new medical director for Highlands County Fire Rescue, following approval of an agreement by the Highlands County Board of County Commissioners at their meeting Tuesday. Pigman assumes the role after the passing of long-time medical director Dr. Donald Geldart, who served the county since 1980. The medical director provides critical oversight of county’s emergency medical services system. This includes supervising and assuming direct responsibility for the medical performance of EMTS and paramedics and ensuring the highest standard of patient care for residents and visitors. Pigman earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine, and holds several years of experience in various medical roles. Officials say they are happy to have his expertise on the team.

>>> New Domestic Violence Legislation

And domestic violence legislation passed earlier this year could bring several changes along with it. Lawmakers passed CS 277 earlier this year, and it currently waits approval from the governor. These changes include harsher penalties, more funding for victims to relocate if they need to, and more.
