News Update for 4/29/20

As things slow down from the Corona Virus infestation, officials from the Florida Department of Health have announced that they now will have only one afternoon update per day. Highlands County yesterday increased an additional case of the Corona. There now have been 81 cases of the virus here since numbers started to be tallied.
The total of those who have been hospitalized here at some point during their illness remains unchanged at 28. Seven local fatalities have been attached to the disease. Anyone who dies with the virus now is listed as a victim of the virus.
Recovery rates currently are not being tracked by the Florida Department of Health.

Bids are being prepared for the demolition of the old Avon Park fire department building. The action will make way for the construction of a new facility that will house the Church Service Center. City officials are preparing to put the demolition of the structure out to bid, but first must have a hazardous materials assessment to determine what materials are inside the building.
Officials from the Church Service Center say they already have accrued donations to help with the construction of a metal building on the site that will meet their needs.

An Avon Park man was arrested after an accident yesterday at Stryker Road and Oleander Drive. Highlands County Sheriff’s officials say 34-year-old Keith Allen Fileger allegedly hit a car injuring the driver. He reportedly then drove down the road, began driving in circles, then slammed into the side of a house.
Fileger has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident and driving under the influence among other things.

There were no serious injuries early this morning when a semi-truck rolled over on its side. The mishap occurred about 4:30 on US 98 near the Okeechobee County line.
Authorities say the big flatbed 18-wheeler is blocked part of the roadway there for a time.
