News Update for 4/5/21

It’s dry season and that means yet more brush fires for Highlands County units to deal with. Yesterday firefighters from Desoto City and Leisure Lakes were joined by Florida Forest Service crews in putting down a couple of blazes off Highway 27.
One charred as much as two acres before they got in under control. No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged. Cause remains under investigation.
Fire officials warn it’s very dry out there and ask residents to be careful with combustibles.

WEEKEND GARAGE FIRE

Tragedy for a Sebring area family as a garage fire destroyed a number of racing go-karts and other materials. Units from West Sebring, Desoto City and Sun ‘N Lake responded to the call on Eagle Court in the Golf Hammock community.
There were mo injuries. Reportedly, no one was home at the time of the fire. Cause remains under investigation.

It was like adding insult to injury. First responders were called to an ATV accident out in Avon Park Lakes over the weekend. However, they say, it took them a while to find the victim.
They finally found the rider off the trail and got them to a helicopter, where they were airlifted out. No names or conditions have been released.

The Frostproof city council will meet tonight for their first session of April. Among other things, they will be planning for future growth by down-zoning a couple of lots on Highway 27 from industrial to commercial.
Property owners have released no firm plans for the land.
