Highlands County commissioners will look at the dispensation of nearly 20-million dollars in American Rescue Plan monies from the federal government when they meet tomorrow morning in regular session. More than 20 different cost centers have beeh identified for the cash – including a proposed $5-million dollar hurricane shelter project and $4.5-million dollars for the county’s planned broadband project. In other action, commissioners will be asked to to approve a plat on the so-called "Four Bulls" subdivision in Avon Park and to OK a provision that will give the county administrator the power to draft and sign letters of support for economic development projects.
A mobile home burned to the ground over the weekend. Units from Desoto City responded to the address off River Drive to find the structure fully-involved in flames.
No injuries were reported in the incident. Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
A Sebring woman reportedly has claimed a million-dollar prize in the Florida Lottery’s 500X THE CASH scratch-off game. Martha Morales of Sebring chose to receive her winnings in a one-time lump-sum payment of $820,000.
The 27-year-old Morales reportedly purchased the winning ticket at the Hammock Road Circle K store.
The city of Frostproof is getting ready for some serious development. At their meeting tonight, council members in the Friendly City will look at changing some 193-acres off TS Wilson and Cock Pen roads from county agriculture to city industrial.
In other action, the council will look at increasing impact fees. The charges would help finance everthing from fire services to the library.
A Frostproof man was killed in a traffic crash last night just north of the Highlands County line. Polk County sheriff’s reports indicate 26-year-old Ty Romero was northbound on Highway 27, when he lost control of his Kia Sorento.
The car went across the southbound lanes of the highway and slammed into a tree. The force of the impact caused Romero to be ejected from the car.
Traffic was re-routed into Highlands County for several hours until the scene was cleared.
A Wauchula man was killed in a vehicle crash on Mosaic property in Hardee County Saturday morning.
The 26-year-old man reportedly was traveling northbound on Boyd Cowart Road when he ran the stop sign at Heard Bridge Road and entered Mosaic property.
He then struck a grass berm and became airborne before coming down on the other side of the berm. The vehicle then rolled into a retention pond and came to a final rest upside down.
