News Update for 7/1/21

A Fort Meyers man was seriously injured yesterday in a Lake Placid traffic accident. According to reports, the unidentified 50-year-old driver was in a sport utility vehicle and attempted to cross railroad tracks near the intersection of Harris Drive and Sunset Terrace.
The SUV was hit broadside by a southbound freight and pushed for a distance down the track. He was taken to a local hospital. Authorities indicate there were no mechanical arms at the crossing.

Preparations are ramping up for a weekend-full of activities commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence. First up will be Sun ‘N Lake with a Friday evening fireworks display. That will be preceded by activities and a food truck rally.
Avon Park will have their display over Lake Verona on Saturday with Sebring and Lake Placid to hold their celebration on Sunday.

Officials at the Sebring International Raceway are reminding members of the Sebring Nation that they are working to retain their crown as North America’s Best Motorsports Race in the USA Today’s 10best poll.
The 12 Hours of Sebring currently is running a strong second – but there only are a few days left. Residents are reminded they can vote once a day on each of their devices, including desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones.

Shoppers alert – we’ll be celebrating more than American Independence Day this weekend! A new sales tax holiday begins today.
Consumers may purchase qualifying recreation and outdoor items such as camping, fishing and boating supplies as well as admissions to festivals, museums, parks and other entertainment and cultural events.
They will be exempt from tax during the so-called Freedom Week Sales Tax Holiday. The event will extend through next Wednesday, July 7.
