News Update for 7/25/22

It appears that the city of Avon Park may be getting some help from Florida Airport Management in their bid to take over operation of the Avon Park Airport. Representatives from the group will be at tonight’s regular council meeting to discuss helping to pay for outside council, as the city negotiates its way through a new Federal Aviation Administration grant program.
The council also is in line for an update in municipal efforts to clean up the City of Charm from code enforcement chief Randy Labelle.
It will be a double-header for Avon Park council members. At 4:00 this afternoon they will hold a special meeting. There, they will discuss the planned budget for the upcoming fiscal year – then set a tentative millage rate.

A weekend fire reportedly destroyed a Sebring home. Units were called to the house on Cyndy’s Lane where they found the roof of the single-story frame dwelling ablaze. Apparently, the residents escaped unharmed. However, two pets perished in the incident.
The house was declared a total loss. Cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Sebring police are investigating an overnight shooting incident. It happened about midnight in the parking lot of the Dimitri’s Restaurant at the intersection of Lakeview Drive and Kenilworth Blve.
Officers arrived at the scene to find a woman suffering from a gunshot wound. no other details have yet been released.

Tonight, will be the first meeting of an omnibus committee to discuss sex education in the Highlands County Schools. Euphemistically dubbed the "Comprehensive Health Review Committee," it is comprised of parents, educators, citizens and one school board member.
Tonight’s opening session has been packed with presentations and information for committee members. it’s slated to commence at 5:30 in the Sebring Middle School commons.

Today is the last chance for those who need to register or change their party registration for the upcoming primary elections. Highlands County Supervisor of Elections Karen Healy is reminding residents that the books close at 5:00 tonight.
Florida has a closed primary system, meaning democrats can only vote for democrats and republicans can only vote in their race in the upcoming August balloting.
Among the seats contested will be a county commission race, seats on the school board as well as the District 18 Congressional seat.
