News Update for 7/30/18

If you want to vote in the upcoming August 28 primary, today is your last day to register. Highlands County Supervisor of Elections Penny Ogg says the books will close at 5:00 this evening across the state. In addition to registering, today is the last day to set your party affiliation for the primaries.
There are a number of contested races on the local, state and national levels on the ballot. More information can be obtained at the Supervisor of Elections website at www.VoteHighlands.com

Volunteers from the West Sebring and Desoto City fire Departments were kept busy over the weekend with a fire on Deloris Avenue. According to reports, there was nobody home when fire broke out in the kitchen.
Apparently, the damage was bad enough to declare the residence in the Valencia Family Mobile Home Park as uninhabitable. Cause was ruled to have been accidental. No injuries were reported in the blaze.

A 71-year-old Polk County motorcyclist was killed over the weekend in a Frostproof traffic accident. According to reports, Jack Lape was riding east on County Road 630 when a car pulled out of North Palm Avenue and into the path of the bike.
Lape’s Harley reportedly hit the Honda Accord. He was thrown from his ‘cycle. Lape was pronounced dead at the scene. Charges in the incident reportedly are pending.

The Superintendent of Schools in Hardee County has called an emergency meeting of the School Board tonight at 5:20. The
purpose of the meeting is to take action on funding of School
Resource Officers for the 2018-19 school year.
The session will follow a regularly-scheduled budget hearing for the Hardee County School system, where board members are set to adopt a tentative milage rate and the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
