The National Weather Service has issued another excessive heat advisory for the area today.
Highlands County is under the advisory until 7:00 tonight. The combination of hot afternoon temperatures and increasing humidity will result in heat index values well over 100 degrees.
Afternoon temperatures will remain above normal, with humidity remaining high through the balance of the week.
Residents are reminded to protect themselves. Stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities and seek shelter if afternoon thunderstorms threaten.
After being tossed from their Avon Park airport location, official of NASGRASS say they have constructed a lawn mower racing track at the Florida Flywheeler’s Park off the Avon Park Cutoff Road near Fort Meade.
This weekend, volunteers will be hanging lights, finishing up painting, moving clay around, and installing the flagpole among other things. Reportedly, a number of mowers may be taking some test laps to see how the new facility runs.
Their plans are to have a soft opening in September with the racing season to start in October.

Polk County Sheriff’s detectives have charged a Lakeland couple with aggravated manslaughter of a child, after their 18-month-old toddler died.
Joel and Jazmine Rondon, both 33 years old, reportedly left the child in a car overnight following a night of partying. Officials say the child died while strapped into her car seat in the extreme heat the next day.
Apparently, they took their six-year-old and eight-year-old to bed, but they left their 18-month-old in the car.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd says the parents tested positive for alcohol and drugs, including methamphetamine.
An Arcadia man faces drug counts after a traffic stop near Zolfo Springs. Hardee County Sheriff’s officials say Martell Johnny Hughes was arrested after the car he was riding in failed to observe the "Move Over" law.
After a backpack with crack cocaine was found in the vehicle. Hughes was arrested for trafficking cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to sell, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The driver, James Travis Scott also of Arcadia, was also arrested for driving with a suspended driver’s license.
