It was back to class today for thousands of Highlands County School children. They had last week off for the Thanksgiving holiday. Motorists are cautioned to watch out for youngsters – especially those walking or riding their bikes home from school.
And remember to slow down through school zones as well.

The local Christmas Season gets underway in earnest tonight as the Avon Park Christmas parade kicks off down Main Street. People already have set out chairs to mark their spots along the Mile Long Mall in the City of Charm.
More than 70 units have signed up for the parade, which will include floats, marching bands, dancers, vintage automobiles and of course, Santa & Mrs. Claus.
It all begins at 7:00 and will be led by Avon Park Mayor Garrett Anderson and members of the city council.

Today is Cyber Monday – that’s where millions of people will be going onto the internet in search of bargains for Christmas. Locally, merchants have reported respectable sales both for Black Friday and Small Business Saturday. In Sebring, hundreds of people turned out to shop small businesses and see the inaugural illumination of this year’s Carousel of Lights on the Circle downtown.

Firefighters from all over the north end of Highlands County, including units from the West Sebring and Highlands Lakes fire departments turned out Saturday to battle a warehouse fire on Highway 27.
The office area of the big metal building across from the Tanglewood community was found fully involved in flames when they arrived at the scene. There were no injuries reported, cause of the blaze is under investigation.
Reportedly, the property recently had been purchased and was slated for renovation.
