Just a reminder – even though we HAVE gotten some rain, we’re still under a burn ban in Highlands County until March 20. Depending on how much moisture we get with this week’s cold front, that may change, but that downpour we got a week or so back just helped – it didn’t cure the problem.

The old Nan-Cess-O-Wee property in Downtown Sebring looks like it’s going to remain a green space for the moment. Dance Unlimited ownership this week notified the Community Redevelopment Board this week that they’ve decided not to build on the site and withdrew its proposal. The hope had been for a multi-story, multi-use building on the site. Dance Unlimited has three locations in the area – downtown, on Highway 27 North and Wauchula.

Sun N Lake of Sebring will be expecting a visitor this afternoon – the ¾ scale replica of the Viet Nam Memorial – known as “The Wall That Heals” – will be escorted into the District this afternoon and set up for public display until Sunday. The 375 foot long wall is the only official scale replica of the Washington, DC Memorial and will be on display near the Sun N Lake Community Center on Edgewater Drive – yes, like the bigger one in DC, visitors can do individual rubbings of the names of loved ones, friends and ones you served with.

The current state of flux in which Federal grants are in has come home to Highlands County’s traffic enforcement – maybe. With funding suspended for grants to local governments, some projects are being put on hold until the picture gets clearer … among them, one of those electronic signs reading your speed to remind you to slow down entering a speed zone, and another for improvements to the intersection of Dall Hall and Main Avenue in Lake Placid. The Sherriff’s Department was also counting on money from Washington to help replace older handheld radios for its deputies, and some flood-control work for the County’s low-lying areas may be at risk.
