News Update 10/21/19

Highlands County commissioners still are working at divesting themselves of county-owned property. The commission has voted to declare 94 lots as surplus. That means they now are up for sale and will go back on the tax roles.
The bulk of the properties are at Sun ‘N Lake and Spring Lake, with others in Placid Lakes, Leisure Lakes and Holiday Shores.

Sebring city council members have voted to seek an opinion from the Florida Ethics Commission on the possible purchase of the old Barnett Bank location on Ridgewood Drive.
City councilman Charlie Lowrance has an interest in the property, and city atttorney Bob Swaine said that Lowrance simply abstaining from the vote and not participating in the converstation might not cover ethics questions involved.
Although the counciil has their eye on it for additional parking, the land comes with the old bank building as well.

Volunteers from the Venus fire department had their hands full when they were called to a car fire. When they arrived at Hicrora Road and Old State Road 8, they found a 2 1/2 gallon gas can ablaze in the roadway.
Seems that an occupant of the vehicle was filling it up, then used a lighter to see what he was doing. The fumes flashed and the man threw the gas can into the road away from the auto.
The occupants were not injured but learned that the vapors will ignite when they contact an open flame.
