News Update for 10/16/20

Highlands County School Board officials have announced that their board meetings once again will be going up on the web. After cajoling from the public, the board previously piloted streaming the regular school board sessions but then ceased to broadcast them.
Authorities now say, since the spring Town Hall meetings, they are prepared to bring school board meetings to a wider audience once again. The new streaming service will commence with the Tuesday, October 20 school board session.

A Frostproof man has been arrested in connection with a hit and run accident that left a Lake Wales Man hospitalized. 26-year-old Joshua Matthews has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident with bodily injury.
Sheriff’s officials say 25-year-old John White of Lake Wales was riding his bicycle on State Road 630 just outside of Frostproof this past Monday night, when he was sideswiped by a vehicle.
Reportedly parts found at the scene, matched up with Matthews 2008 Chevy Silverado.

One man is dead and four Polk County Sheriff’s deputies are on administrative leave following a Wednesday night incident in Frostproof. Lawmen were called to the home on Freedom on reports of a domestic disturbance.
There they encountered 28-year-old Yoel Arnaldo Mejia Santel. Crisis intervention officers reportedly talked with Santel, who ultimately charged deputies with a machete. He was shot and died at the scene.
A number of agencies have been called in to sort out exactly what happened.
