News Update for 10/20/23

The Sebring Historical Society will stage their inaugural "Pioneer Daze" event tomorrow at the Highlands County Fairgrounds. Based inside the Alan Jay Arena, there will be kids’ events such as a fossil dig, clothes washing on an old washboard and the chance to use an old timey pump to get water.
For the rest of the family, there will be a variety of vendors, food trucks and other activities. That event will run from 10am until 4pm tomorrow. There also will be a live radio remote on Lite 105.7 FM.

A mobile home at Sun ‘N Lakes South was totally destroyed by fire yesterday. Units from Sun ‘N Lakes South, Placid Lakes, Highlands Park and Lake Placid responded, but were unable to save the Highlands Boulevard residence.
No injureies were reported, cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Veteran’s Day is this coming November 11, but Highlands County Commissioner Don Elwell says he thinks they need more than just a day. Elwell has suggested that the county proclaim November as "Veteran’s Month."
He has suggested that citizens who have ideas to salute veterans throught out the month contact the county – that would include both observances and commercial considerations, such as veterans’ discounts on goods and services.

A former jail is getting new life in Polk County just in time for Halloween.
The sheriff’s office has turned the old Polk County Jail in Bartow into a haunted house. The facility closed in 2000 after almost 40 years, and at least one deputy swears it’s really haunted. She tells Fox 13 News there were a lot of deaths in the jail, and it has a grim history.
The haunted house opens tonight from 6:30 to 10:30. Tickets range from five dollars to 15 dollars, and proceeds go to the United Way of Central Florida.
