Residents in Avon Park may be looking at a new assessment. City council members last night learned about new state regulations about stormwater runoff and how municipalities will have to take care of the problem.
To help pay for a master study and remediation efforts, city officials are looking at the possibility of establishing an assessment on residents and businesses in the city of charm.
Council members voted to start advertising the plan, and will discuss it with consulutants and engineers at their December 11th meeting.

The 27-year-old Arcadia man faces counts of DUI Manslaughter in connection with a June 28 single vehicle crash on State Road 70 near Robert McGee Road
A passenger in the vehicle, identified only as a 27-year old Arcadia man, was killed in the accident. Zamora was seriously hurt when his SUV went off the road and slammed into a concrete utility pole.
A man accused of killing a pastor’s son in Winter Haven now is in custody. Polk County sheriff’s officials announced Taquion "Quan" Cotton has been arrested for the murder of Roderick Wilson.
The 20-year-old Wilson was found shot to death Sunday in the parking lot of the Pentecostal Church of God on 34th Street, Northwest.
The 22-year-old Cotton lives near the church. He’s facing charges that include first-degree murder.
Sheriff Grady Judd says there’s no apparent connection between Cotton and Wilson, and there’s no word on what may have led to the shooting.
A Winter Haven man reportedly has been arrested after being was caught in the middle of moving a murder victim’s body.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies report deputies were called to Deeson Road in Lakeland Saturday for a shooting.
According to detectives, the victim went to a location on Deeson Road and met with suspect Shannon Owens, 31, of Winter Haven.
Multiple witnesses told lawmen that they’d seen Owens trying to “remove” the victim’s body — which had an upper body gunshot wound.
Detectives said the witnesses detained Owens until first responders got to the scene.
Owens faces charges of second-degree murder, felon in possession of a firearm, and several out-of-county warrants.
Hillsborough deputies have authority in that portion of the city.
