News Update for 11/30/20

A bad accident on the Sebring Parkway last night. Police say 67-year-oldColbert Pericles apparently was trying to cross the Parkway near the intersection of South Commerce Avenue about 6pm.
He wasn’t fast enough – and got clipped by an oncoming car. The Sebring man was flown out, reportedly to Lakeland Regional Medical Hospital. At last report, he remained in critical condition.

Avon Park firefighters were busy overnight. Flames reportedly broke out in Tri-Plex housing facility on Verona Avenue about 9:30.
Fire officials say it appears to have been electrical in nature. The unit reportedly had been used as an office, so nobody apparently was living there. No injuries were reported and the next door neighbors have been temporarily displaced while cleanup is under way.

Farm-City week was held across the country last week. It turned out to be a happy one for the folks in the Highway Park community.
Members of the Highlands Farm Bureau donated $1,000 to the Highway Park Neighborhood Council to help offset the cost associated with preparing meals that were delivered door-to-door – in an effort to stay safe and feed those in need on Thanksgiving Day.
Local Farm Bureau representatives said it was a great way to celebrate Thanksgiving and wind up the annual Farm-City observance.

It was back to school today for thousands of youngsters across Highlands County. Motorists are cautioned to watch for students walking, riding their bicycles or walking along the roads after being dropped off at their designated bus stops.
There also will be enforcement in school zones this afternoon – so motorists are reminded to slow down there as well.

A Frostproof girl was killed and a Bowling Green girl was seriously injured over the weekend in a Manateee County accident. According to reports, the pair were riding the All-Terrain Vehicle on private property along State Road 39, when the ATV overturned.
The girls were thrown from the vehicle. Reportedly, neither was wearing a helmet. Not other details are yet available.
