News Update for 12/28/20

A 12-year-old Sebring boy was killed in a Christmas morning tragedy. Florida Highway Patrol reports indicate the youngster was riding an All Terrain Vehicle on private property off Henscratch Road when the John Deere Gator hit a tree.
A limb reportedly came across the hood, striking the boy. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he expired.
His aunt, Karen Smith, has established a GoFundMe account in the name of Kody Newbould. Monies raised will be help to pay for final and other expenses.

Three people were injured and six people were displaced from a fire early yesterday morning off Granada Boulevard at Sun ‘N Lake. Units from West Sebring and Desoto City joined Sun ‘N Lake firefighters in dousing the blaze in the tri-plex unit.
The three were taken to an area hospital – no word on their conditions. Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
No dollar damage estimate has yet been released. However, it appears to be extensive.

A brush fire had units from Highlands Lakes busy yesterday. They were able to contain the flames to about a quarter acre at East Albritton and Geneva Roads.
Apparently, a vehicle driving through the lot set some dry vegetation ablaze.

Polk County sheriff’s officials say a man was killed on Christmas night when he was hit by a car on Scenic Highway in Babson Park.
Deputies said evidence and witness reports indicate the man was standing in the middle of the southbound lane about 8pm, waving his arms as if he was trying to stop traffic.
No names or other details have yet been released.

Polk County Sheriff’s officials are investigating a Lakeland home invasion incident where one person was killed and at least three others were injured.
Deputies have identified a 70-year-old woman as the fatality – but have not released her name. It’s unclear as to how many shooters there were or a motive in the incident. Detectives say the investigation is continuing.
