Motorists driving though Sebring today will have to budget some extra time. Ridgewood Drive from the Parkway to NE Lakeview Drive is shut down until 7:00 this evening.
The closure will include the Historic Circle and all the spoke streets to Wall Street.
The detours reportedly are being done to allow a film crew in, to do unobstructed shots of the downtown area in preparation for a possible HGTV special on the city.
There is a similar road closure planned for next Monday, February 19th. That will be for a rally that’s planned to show the pride Sebring has in their community.
The Highlands County Sheriff’s office launched their body cam pilot program today. There will be 15 deputies involved, five each from the patrol, detention and school resource divisions that will be wearing the cameras.
In all, the Sheriff’s Office has purchased 180 of the Axon units and the associated hardware at just over $1.4 million dollars.
The pilot program is slated to run about a month.
A controversial policy on public participation in meetings and workshops was pulled from the agenda last night at the Highlands County School Board meeting.
The new policy apparently involves sweeping changes on how citizens will be allowed to address the board and issues of concern.
Saying she wanted the board to "get it right," Nicole Radonski made the motion to move the item to a later school board workshop for further review.
In other action, the board voted to ink an agreement with "Choices" for their "Relationships Under Construction" progam as part of the sex education cirruculum.
After a year of advertising and interviewing candidates, the city of Avon Park finally has a public works director. City council members officially met Jason Atkinson at their meeting this week.
Atkinson comes from Miami, and will be moving to the City of Charm. Reportedly, he’s been on the job for about three weeks now and has been hard at work.
Avon Park City Manager Mark Schrader said that Atkinson soon will be put on a number of "big projects that are on the horizon."
A crash with a tanker truck is blamed for causing a mess in Polk County.
The truck hit a car yesterday in Willow Oak on SR 60 West at Turner Road. The truck wound up on its side, diesel fuel spilled onto the road, and it was shut down for cleanup.
Polk sheriff’s officials say no one was killed, but there were some injuries. No details have been released. The road is expected to be open this morning.
