Highlands County sheriff’s deputies were called to the hospital last night when a patient showed up with a bullet wound. Apparently, the injury is not life-threatening, but detectives are having a difficult time trying to find out when, where, why and how it happened.
Units from Lake Placid were called to a structure fire last night on Orange Road NE. Turns out it was an electric recliner that got overheated. Firefighters extinguished the flames and dragged the chair outside before the fire could spread.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
The Welcome to Sun ‘N Lake sign reportedly took a lick last night. Apparently, a motorist on Highway 27 lost control, went off the road and hit the concrete structure.
No serious injuries were reported, but the sign was damaged. Early reports indicate the breaks gave out on the car.
The 87th annual Highlands County Fair opens today in Sebring. Organizers are trying a new method of ticketing, requiring patrons to go on line and get a QR code to get in. They say the new procedure will be easy, and will allow people to skip the lines.
Inside this year’s fair will be plenty of booths exhibits and displays, fair food, carnival rides and entertainment. On tap for this evening are magic shows, the sea lion splash, a blacksmithing demonstration and the Junior Miss Highlands County Pageant.
Gates open at 5pm, the fair runs through next Saturday.
Last year, the Sebring Chamber of Commerce relocated to the Circle Theater downtown. Now, officials have announced a capital improvement project to remodel the historic building. They say the refurbishing will include new carpeting, paint and fixtures – as well as some structural items.
The program will be for current members of the Chamber who want to get involved. They say they hope to have the improvements done by the end of the year.
The expansion of the Thomas "Flash" Gordon Baseball Museum in Avon Park is getting an old-fashioned boost. They will host the re-creation of a 1932 game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the House of David Longbeards tomorrow at Head Field.
Organizers are asking participants to come dressed as residents of the 1920’s. Admission is free and there will be free hot dogs and popcorn. They also plan to film a black & white silent film of the game and the crowd, gates will open tomorrow afternoon at 2:00.
