After decades of struggle, it appears the Brickell Building in downtown Avon Park may soon be a viable entity. Council members in the City of Charm tonight will consider an agreement that will turn the structure over to Dan Sauls Realty for development.
Sauls says he already has tenants for the lower floor with plans in the works for the second story.
In other action this evening, council members are expected to hear the final reading of a measure to drop water capacity and hook-up fees for new business, and will hear from representatives of the Heartland Coalition for the Homeless.
Firefighters were busy over the weekend with a couple of big incidents. First, the Smoke Shack Restaurant in Lake Placid was destroyed by fire. Officials say there were staff and customers inside the place at the time of the blaze, but despite the speed and size of the fire, there were no injuries.
Units from all over the south end responded to the call. No cause for the fire or dollar damage estimate has been listed,
About the same time, units were called to a hay and brush fire off Lake Groves Road in Lake Placid. about 20 large bales of hay and 100-feet of pasture were charred there. There were no injuries and no cause for the blaze has been listed.
A Highlands County man was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in Sebring. According to reports, a Harley Davidson ridden by Nick Lindsay collided with a car on Highway 27 near the Lowe’s Home Improvement store.
Lindsay was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center in very critical condition.
A Frostproof youth has been charged with attempted murder, following a stabbing incident. According to reports, 19-year-old David Martinez has been charged with attempted murder and aggrivated assault after an attack on his girlfriend and her new boyfriend.
Apparently, the girl had told Martiez she was breaking up with him. Sheriff’s deputies say he did not take the news well. In a confrontation, Martinez reportedly cut both himself and the new boyfriend with a pocket knife.
He was arrested and booked into the Polk County jail.
