News Update for 3/9/21

Highlands County Sheriff’s detectives are looking into reports that somebody was going to “shoot up” the Lake Placid Middle School. Authorities say the post popped up on social media last night, but so far, there’s been no indication there was anything to it, other than words.
Highlands County School Board officials have not said what level of disruption to classes there was, however, sheriff’s officials say there are extra deputies on campus today to ensure the safety of students and staff while the investigation continues.
School Resource Deputies at all schools also are taking extra security precautions today and there will be increased patrols around the schools as well.
Anyone with information about who made the threats is asked to call the Highlands County Sheriff’s office

Avon Park city council members met virtually last night with new consultants and legal counsel to help with a pending deal with a statewide company who wants to make a longterm lease of the airport facility in the City of Charm.
Officials from Florida Airport Management want a 30-year lease to both run the airport and establish an extensive hemp-growing operation on the property.
Both gave council variables that needed to be included in any pending contract to ensure proof of performance by the private company. They will take up the issue again at their next meeting.

Those wanting to get conronavirus vaccine shots now have yet another opportunity. Highlands County commissioners have announced a federally-supported vaccine site has been set up at the Highlands County Sports Complex. The shots, paid for by tax dollars, are available to frontline healthcare workers, and those 65 years of age and older.
The facility will be open today from 9am until 5pm.

Things have been opened back up in Florida for some time. Officials at the School Board of Highlands County have announced that their curbside service for meal delivery now will come to an end.
The last day for such service will be tomorrow. Board officials say the Food & Nutrition Department is gearing up for their summer service program.
