Those wanting to learn more about what veterans have done for our country will have an opportunity to learn more beginning tomorrow. The Wreaths Across America Educational Exhibit arrived by escort today at the Lakeshore Mall, and will be open to the pubic tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday from 10am until 7pm.
The 48-foot exhibit is equipped with a 24-person screening room that will show videos with a number of interactive computers as well. There’s also a dedicated wall of information.
Organizers say their mission is to educate about service and sacrifice, and to share stories of patriotism and love of country.
Units from all over Highlands County were joined by Florida Forest Service crews yesterday in containing a brush fire in the Sun ‘N Lake community. In all, some 55 acres off Granada Blvd. were charred before the blaze was brought under control. There were a number re-kindles overnight, however, standby crews put them down as they flared up.
A number of homes were evacuated due to the proximity of the flames, but in the end, there were no injuries and no reports of property damage.
Responders did have one problem – apparently somebody was flying a drone, looking for video footage – that interferred with the fire/rescue response.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
There was a structure fire in Desoto City yesterday, the mobile home reportedly was fully involved when units arrived at the scene.
The two residents escaped the flames, however a pet dog died in the incident. The fire was ruled to have been accidental
Verona Avenue was closed in Avon Park for a time this morning due to a snapped power pole. Duke Energy crews were called in to deal with the lines. How the pole snapped remains unclear.
Meanshile, the streets in Sebring are open today – there had been some closures planned for HGTV television crews filming work in the downtown area, but those closures apparently have been cancelled.
Work is underway to contain a brush fire in Polk County. Polk County Fire Rescue and the Florida Forestry Service started battling the fire off Highway 640 in Mulberry yesterday.
That one currently is estimated to cover almost five hundred acres. No injuries have been reported, and officials say there are no structures in danger.
