News Update for 5/28/19

It seems to have been a safe and sane Memorial Day weekend with no incidents of note reported by local law enforcement and fire rescue officials here in Highlands County.

The holiday may be over for most of us, but not everybody. School’s out for the summer. That means there are thousands of kids now out playing, walking and riding their bicycles.
Motorists are urged to use caution – and watch for children at play. That being said, hundreds of teachers still are in the classrooms mopping up and finishing their work for this school year.

Thieves took the holiday to work out near Lorida. Highlands County Sheriff’s officials say the Spring Lake Market apparently was broken into overnight. No word yet on what, or how much was taken. Authorities say it’s still under investigation.

A Polk County woman had more than cold air coming out of the vent in her car. The woman reportedly found the small corn snake slithering out of her vent while parked in the Lakeland area. She fled. The snake was later found and relocated – outside the car.
