News Update for 5/30/19

The Avon Park city council will be meeting this evening. Their regular Monday night session was pushed back, due to the observance of Memorial Day.
First and foremost, the council will look at an agreement that could hire City Attorney Gerald Buhr as their full time legal counsel.
Council members also be taking care of the business of business. They will get an update on the agreement with the NuCor steel manufacturing plant, look at a pact that would allow a business to run the Avon Park Executive Airport and talk about the Classic Caladiums facility.

An Avon Park man has been charged by federal authorities with armed drug trafficking. Samuel Martinez has been indicted on counts of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine as well as various weapons counts.
The 40-year-old Martinez originally was arrested back in March by Highlands County Sheriff’s deputies. He remains in the Highlands County jail.

It’s a common practice, but apparently it’s not legal. Sebring police report the city of Sebring has two laws that prohibit the parking of boats at city owned beaches. In fact, according to the ordinance, vessels cannot be operated within 200-feet of Hidden Beach, Crescent Beach, the City Pier or City Pier Beach.
The measure also established a restricted speed and wake area within a 500-foot radius at Veterans Beach boat ramp as well as the canal between Lake Jackson and Little Lake Jackson.
However, there does not seem to be any proviso about pulling up along the shoreline of Highway 27.

It’s a night at the Sebring International Raceway as they hold the finale to their spring drag racing season. It’s the opening for a number of activites that will stretch through the weekend
The Summer Showdown, will be held Saturday and Sunday, with drag racing, drifting competition, a car show and a concert.
In straight-line racing there will be classes for big tire, small tire, factory and true-street classes. There also will be a drifting competition by cars on the US Drift Circuit and a car show with classic, custom, muscle and foreign sports cars and trucks.
