News Update for 7/16/19

A Saturday morning incident at the Lakeshore Mall had Highlands County Sheriff’s working with US Marshalls in trying to apprehend a fugitive. In the end, 34-year-old Brian Roosevelt Wilson of Windemere committed suicide, rather than be taken into custody.
Sheriff’s officials had received word from the US Marshal’s service that Wilson might be in the area. He was found sitting in his vehicle at the Lakeshore Mall.
Reportedly, he tried to flee, but crashed his Malibu. He then took his own life.

Another lightning strike fire kept firefighters busy over the weekend. Units from Sun ‘N Lakes South and Highway Park were called to snuff out the flames in a field off Driggers Road along a canal there. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Friday night units from Sun n Lakes South, Placid Lakes and Desoto City responded to a fire in a room at the Lake Grassy Inn. Approximately $20,000 damage was reported there.
While enroute to that one, Desoto City units were diverted to a fire inside the Save-A-Lot supermarket in Lake Placid.
That incident appears to have been a set fire in the grocery isle – the State Fire Marshal is investigating. Minor damage wasw reported there.
