It appears to have been a safe & sane Independence Day celebration locally. Professional pyrotechnic displays went off without a hitch last night in Avon Park, Sebring and Lake Placid.
Officials from Highlands County say they have received no reports of any fireworks-related injuries or fires – despite many calls of residents celebrating into the early morning hours.
And other than their regular slate of calls, authorities say there was nothing out of the ordinary to report from overnight.
Bowling Green Mayor Sam Fite has been stumping in Highlands
County. He’s not been seeking election, rather, Fite has been soliciting membership in the Ridge League of Cities. In the past few weeks he has been able to bring Avon Park back into the organization.
Tuesday night he was at the Sebring city council meeting attempting to get the City on the Circle to rejoin – but despite a comment from Mayor John Shoop they needed to get re-involved, council took no formal action on the request.
Both cities had dropped out of the organization years ago.
