News Update 2/28/20

Activity gets underway at the Sebring International Raceway today as the annual SVRA Spring Fling begins. Set for the track today are practice, testing and qualifying sessions for the vintage and historic race cars.
Also slated to take some laps today are competitors in the Trans-Am series, that will open their season at Sebring this weekend. It was here they got their start more than a half century ago. The races run through Sunday.

Avon Park city council members are looking to the state for a way to give up their duties as the Community Redevelopment Agency. State law says once they take over those duties, there’s no way to give it over to another board.
In respone, Avon Park City Attorney Gerald Buhr has drafted legislation for the state that would allow such an action. Officials plan to take the proposal to the Florida League of Cities and the Florida Redevelopment Association to seek their support in changing the state statutes.

For concerned local residents; Highlands County Emergency Management officials say they are monitoring the coronavirus situation and are in touch with state officials.
Gov. Ron DeSantis says so far, the state currently has had no cases of so-called COVID-19 virus.
As always, health officials say people should take daily precautions to help prevent the spread of most any illnes.
The best way to protect yourself is to practice good hand washing hygiene, also stay home and keep children home when sick.
The Florida Department of Health says the state currently is experiencing a moderately severe influenza season.

Sebring High School Varsity baseball will play Jones High from Orlando for the Regional Championship Friday night at 7:00. To give a bit of perspective – the last time that happened, current Highlands County Tax Collector Eric Zwayre was a player on the Blue Streak team/
