LANDFILL FIRE
Units have cleared the Highlands County landfill for the second time this weekend. Firefighters – both paid and volunteers from all over the county were called out to extinguish a couple of fires at the landfill.
The first broke out Friday and was determined to have been extinguished. The second erupted yesterday about 1:30 and burned late into the evening. It remains unclear whether or not the second fire was a re-kindle.
No word on how much burned, but the drift smoke was smelled as far away as west Sebring past Highway 27.
Cause of the blaze remains under investigation, but officials say it may have been due to combustible materials discarded in the trash. No injuries were reported in either incident.
