News Update for 2/21/24

By a 3-2 vote, Highlands County commissioners yesterday voted to enact a four month moratorium on the acceptance, processing and/or consideration of any petition, application or request on lands for mobile home parks.
A number of projects already in process here reportedly will not be affected by the moratorium – while commissioners look at rules and regulations for such developments.

The 2024 edition of the Florida Cracker Trail Ride will arrive in Highlands County today. The riders and wagoneers spent the night near Zolfo Springs in Hardee County, and will arrive here this morning. They first will stop by the Cracker Trail Elementary School for a visit, a whip-cracking demonstration and a history lesson.
Around noon today, they will ride up State Road 66 and across Highway 27. That marks the half-way point in their cross-state trek. They’ll spend the night at the Smith Ranch.

They’ll begin loading cars in today for this weekend’s Sportscar Vintage Racing Association’s SpeedTour home opener. It’s both the first race of the season for the SVRA and the Trans-Am series – both of which got their start here in Sebring.
There will be an optional test day tomorrow for competitors. More than 200 cars and drivers are expected in for this weekend’s event.
