Avon Park city council will meet for their first session of the month this evening. Among other things, the council will go over the lease for the Avon Park Senior Activities Center, and get a five month update of revenues and expenditures by the city from finance director Melanie Sauerhafer.
In other action, city attorney Gerald Buhr will give the council information on legislative bills that will affect the city, and what council members will be responsible for under the controversial Form Six.
A 30-year-old Sebring woman has been arrested and jailed, after her toddler sons were found wandering unattended on Memorial Drive. Social media posts initially helped to identify the two and four year-old boys.
When Highlands County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the Parkview Drive home, they found Amanda Marie Thomas passed out on the floor and smelling of alcohol. Reportedly, she expressed concern over the whereabouts of the boys.
She was charged with child neglect and booked into the Highlands County Jail. The boys have been remanded into the custody of their father.
A Frostproof woman was brutally murdered over the weekend. According to reports, 46-year-old Elvia Espinoza was stabbed to death at her home. Her son, 21-year-old Emanuel Espinoza has been charged in connection with the incident.
Espinoza was a second grade teacher at Ben Hill-Griffin Elementary School, while her son is a pre-med student at the University of Florida.
He has been charged with first degree murder and booked into the Polk County jail.
Three people were killed Saturday night in a three vehicle accident near Lake Wales. Preliminary reports indicate a Ford Flex driven by Hanna Weisner was westbound on State Road 60 East, she pulled out to pass a slower vehicle, and hit an oncoming estbound Ford F-150.
Killed was the 22-year-old Winter Haven woman as well as two men in the truck. A three year old boy in the back of the truck was injured – but is expected to recover.
