Highlands County deputies, Sebring Police, and school officials are warning students after two separate incidents involving fake firearms this week. Authorities say one student pointed an unloaded flare gun at another student at Sebring High School, while five teens were detained after witnesses reported what appeared to be a gun being pointed from a moving vehicle. Investigators later found Orbeez-style replica guns inside the car. Officials say fake weapons can easily be mistaken for real firearms, creating dangerous situations. Charges are pending in both cases.

Fourteen students in the Sebring High School culinary program have been awarded a combined $18,000 in scholarships. The program, led by Chef Mae Lee Tang-Gilroy, raises money throughout the year through student-run food sales, teacher lunches, and seasonal drink sales. School officials say it’s the only culinary program in Highlands County that provides scholarships to graduating seniors, including students not pursuing college after graduation.

A Winter Haven man is facing additional charges after deputies say he tried to avoid arrest by giving a fake name. Polk County deputies were searching near Dundee Road Tuesday following a hit-and-run investigation when they encountered 46-year-old Robert St. John. Deputies say St. John identified himself as “David,” but was quickly recognized and admitted he lied because he had active warrants. Authorities say he was wanted in both Hardee and Polk counties and now also faces a charge for providing false identification to law enforcement.

Florida’s education commissioner is headed to Polk County for a new gig. Anastasios Kamoutsas confirmed the move one year after become commissioner. He’s set to take over as president of Polk State College. An official confirmation vote is set for June 3rd.
