This is Hurricane Awareness Week. The start of the Hurricane Season doesn’t actually begin for another month or so – but experts say it’s time now to plan and prepare.
That includes having things ready for both home and business. An active hurricane season has been forecast so residents are urged to go through their disaster supply kit checklist. They need to make certain that they are stocked up with food, water first aid and other provisions.
They say it’s also a good time to see that homes, businesses and outbuildings are in good repair, and pets are provided for should a big storm hit the area.
It’ll be a double header tomorrow for the Highlands County commission. They first will meet in regular session. Among other things, commissioners will look at $5.7 million dollars for milling and resurfacing projects on three different areas of the Sebring Parkway.
According to reports, the Florida Department of Transportation will stand good for $2.8 million, with the city of Sebring to reimburse the county for half of the remaining $2.8 million.
At 2:00 tomorrow afternoon, commissioners will hold a speial meeting to discuss the fire assessment study. That will help determine what residents will be charged for fire protection.
It’s currently still the dry season, and units from Desoto City were called out yesterday to put out a brush fire west of Sebring. This one occurred in the so-called "bird streets" off Egret Street.
No injuries were reported, no structures apparently were threatened and no cause for the fire has yet been released.
A man is dead after a shooting in Polk County. It happened yesterday afternoon in Auburndale.
Police say the 27-year-old victim was found in a car suffering from a gunshot would. He was taken to the hospital where he passed away.
No arrest has been announced, and there’s no word on a motive.
