There will be a Peace Officers’ Memorial Day ceremony today. Members of the law enforcement community, local leaders and citizens will gather to honor those who have been killed in the line of duty.
The observance will commence at 11 a.m. in front of the Highlands County Sheriff’s office at 400 S. Eucalyptus St. in Sebring.
It’ll be a double header for the Highlands County commission today. They first will meet in regular session this morning. Among other things, commissioners will look at $5.7 million dollars for milling and resurfacing projects on three different areas of the Sebring Parkway.
According to reports, the Florida Department of Transportation will stand good for $2.8 million, with the city of Sebring to reimburse the county for half of the remaining $2.8 million.
At 2:00 this afternoon, commissioners will hold a speial meeting to discuss the fire assessment study. That will help determine what residents will be charged for fire protection.
Those who want to find out more about the county commission and its activites can gather tonight at the Highlands County Tea Party meeting. Highlands County Commissioner Christopher Campbell will be there to talk about his accomplishments and some of the issues pending before the commission.
The District 5 Commissioner is winding up his first term in office, and has not drawn opposition in the upcoming election.
The Tea Party meets at the Vietnam Veterans hall, 33565 Grand Prix Drive (behind the Sebring Walmart). Meetings commence at 6pm.
Highlands County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a man implicated in an April 29th shooting incident. Malik Jamal Callahan is believed to have been the man who shot into a car parked on Hopkins Avenue in the Highway Park community south of Lake Placid.
Neither of the occupants were injured in the incident.
The 27-year-old Callahan has been charged with numerous counts, including two counts of attempted murder. He is being held in the Highlands County jail without bond.
