News Update for 9/27/18

It’s that time of year again, when the winter drag racing season begins. Officials at the Sebring International Raceway say this time it will start with a bang, as sessions will be held tonight on the historic front stretch of the track, then again on Saturday with a gala celebration.
The so-called “Battle of the Bridge” will feature monetary prizes in three different categories, there will be a “drifting” contest for those who enjoy “controlled skids,” and a car show will be featured as well.
Tonight’s drag racing will kick off at 6pm.

A planned memorial to the canines of the military continues to make its way through the municipal bureaucracy of Avon Park. At one time suggested to go in on the mall, organizers of the War Dog Memorial say they now would like to see it on the grounds of the city’s community center to increase visibility.
City attorney Glinda Pruitt has called for final plans for review, noting the city could be held liable if people climb on the statues and were injured.

It appears yet another Highlands County school teacher may be on the way to termination, due to alledged inappropriate behavior. According to reports, an investigation by district officials into activites by Avon Park Middle School science teacher Stacy Lepheart comes with a recommenndation of moving toward termination.
Leapheart reportedly has 15 days to respond to the action and can call for a hearing – either before the school board or a magistrate.
